Summer means outdoor playtime, lazy days at the beach and lots of backyard barbeques. But what do you do when rainy days roll around?
Don’t fret! Phase 4 films released three new family-friendly films this month that are sure to keep kids entertained rain or shine! All films will be easily accessible to rent at Redbox locations and for purchase at retailers nationwide starting this summer.
Our favorite movie released by Phase 4 films this summer was Smitty!
Smitty, released in July 2012, is a heartwarming film for the entire family! Starring Peter Fonda, Mira Sorvino and Louis Gossett Jr., tells the story of thirteen-year-old Ben and his smart farm dog who helps teach Ben important life lessons about friendship, family and responsibility. His struggling, single mother has had enough of her son's mischief. She sends Ben to his grandfather’s farm in Iowa for the summer, where he crosses paths with a lovable mutt. With help from the unlikely canine companion, Ben learns the importance of friendship, family and responsibility. When life gets tough for Ben, a friendly paw is all it takes to pull him through. It is rated PG and runs for 94 minutes.
My son absolutely loves dogs so I knew he would love this movie about a young boy and a dog! The story line of the movie was so cute and it really was a family friendly movie that can be enjoyed by every member of the family no matter what age! I really appreciated that I did't have to explain about violence, bad words, or other common problems in many "family friendly" movies these days!
Another movie being released this month is Freddy Frogface.
Freddy Frogface is an animated film centers around ten-year-old Victor who can’t wait to perform in his town’s talent show with his dog Sausage. The town bully Freddy Frogface has a sinister plot to spoil Victor’s plans. Being small doesn't make life easy for little ten-year-old Victor and his friends, who not only have to face a world full of stern grown-ups but also the town bully Freddy Frogface. When a circus comes to the sleepy little town, Victor is thrilled at having the chance to perform in a talent show with his dog Sausage. Yet Freddy soon comes up with a sinister plot of his own to spoil Victor´s plans. This movie is rated PG and runs 85 minutes.
This movie earns it's PG rating with the words that are used and bullying. I didn't think my son was ready for a movie like this nor do I think it was sending the best message. I think it is important to stand up for yourself but not by becoming a bully yourself. I would recommend this movie for older children who can understand the difference between right and wrong better and who may just enjoy the humor more than the message.
The last movie released this month from Phase 4 films is Donkey X.
Donkey X is based on the 400 year-old Spanish classic, Don Quijote de la Mancha and follows Rucio, the bravest donkey of Castile, as he tells the story of the legendary Don Quixote. Rucio jumps at the opportunity to join Don Quixote on his quest to battle The Half Moon Knight and overcome the dangerous obstacles that lurks them on the way. It is rated PG and runs 90 minutes.
This movie was fun to watch but the jokes, language and humor may be better understood by older children. But overall, it was a funny and fun movie to watch!
So next time you are looking for a good movie to watch on family movie night, check out these new releases from Phase 4 Films. I definitely recommend Smitty as your first choice!
