About The Book:
Gambling everything, including the family farm, Cullen McNamara travels to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with his most recent invention. But the noise in the Fair's Machinery Palace makes it impossible to communicate with potential buyers. In an act of desperation, he hires Della Wentworth, a teacher of the deaf, to tutor him in the art of lip-reading.
The young teacher is reluctant to participate, and Cullen has trouble keeping his mind on his lessons while intently watching her lips. Like the newly invented Ferris Wheel, he is caught in a whirl between his girl back home, his dreams as an inventor, and his unexpected attraction to his new tutor. Can he keep his feet on the ground, or will he be carried away?

My Opinion
If you are lover of historical fiction, then this book is a gold mine!! I learned so much about the Chicago World's Fair and it was SO INTERESTING!!! It was also really interesting to learn about how people treated deaf people back then and how they thought they HAD to learn to lip read or be cast off! You can tell Deeanne really did her research for this book and I loved learning about all the displays, buildings and sights to see at the Fair!Besides the great historical aspects of this book, it was also written really well and I loved the romance and love story that developed between Cullen and Della. No matter how hard they fought the developing love, they couldn't stop something God had planned for them!
This book brought me to tears, made me smile and laugh, and made me want to research even more about the Chicago World's Fair and sign language and how people treated the deaf in the early 1900's. That is a sign of a GREAT Book!!!

Hi Marissa,
I know this post is one of your more seasoned posts, but I couldn't help but find it interesting.
I'm a big romance reader. I mean BIG. Although, contemporary romance is more my thing.
But I've got a co-worker who's been trying to get me interested in Historical Rom. for a while now.
I think I'm going to start here, with Deeanne Gists's IT HAPPENED AT THE FAIR.
Your review has me convinced. My interest is totally piqued, so I'm sure my co-worker would send you a HUGE THANK YOU! :)
Great post, Marissa. Thanks for sharing.
